Acronyms, Abbreviations & Initialisms
Acronyms and initialisms are abbreviations, and are formed using the initial letters of a group of words. Acronyms in the strict sense are
pronounceable words such as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), or WHO (World Health Organisation).
Abbreviations can be printed in any form - uppercase, lowercase, with or without periods for each letter, depending on your preference, e.g., "A.F.K." (Away from keyboard) or simply as "AFK."
